{"id":952,"date":"2019-03-28T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T10:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=952"},"modified":"2019-03-27T17:47:21","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T17:47:21","slug":"persons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=952","title":{"rendered":"Persons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was delighted to find an article in this month&#8217;s &#8220;Leisure Painter&#8221; about putting people in paintings.\u00a0 Somehow a person, however sketchy, near the focus of your picture, maybe going towards it, helps the viewer be in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Coates is the painter and author of the article, and his very simple construction has helped those of my students who were really struggling, to draw people effectively.\u00a0 I think most people know that carrot shapes make effective people, but he refined that idea.\u00a0 First he gave four rules for vital statistics.\u00a0 These are for &#8220;generic person&#8221;, some unknown person, male or female, walking down the street, but would make a good starting point even for a more detailed drawing.<\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; the width of the shoulders = a third of the headless height;<\/p>\n<p>the width of the head = a third of the width of the\u00a0 shoulders;<\/p>\n<p>knees are a third of the body &#8216;s(headless!) height from the ground;<\/p>\n<p>and the groin is about halfway up the body (see above).<\/p>\n<p>But here&#8217;s the clever bit &#8211;\u00a0 if you sketch in three attached\u00a0 SQUARES\u00a0 arranged vertically on the page and draw your blunt-nosed &#8220;carrot&#8221; to fit the shape, you have the beginnings of your person.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Carrots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-954\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Carrots-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Carrots-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Carrots-150x122.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Carrots.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The rest of the article goes on to describe how to make this person walk, etc.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a great read, and if you are struggling with people, that article in &#8220;Leisure Painter&#8221; will certainly help.\u00a0 Just remember to make squares, not rectangles!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was delighted to find an article in this month&#8217;s &#8220;Leisure Painter&#8221; about putting people in paintings.\u00a0 Somehow a person, however sketchy, near the focus of your picture, maybe going towards it, helps the viewer be in the scene.
