{"id":942,"date":"2019-03-21T10:00:27","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T10:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=942"},"modified":"2019-03-20T18:09:58","modified_gmt":"2019-03-20T18:09:58","slug":"atmosphere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=942","title":{"rendered":"Atmosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We looked at how few colours were needed to make many other ones last week.\u00a0 Now I want to build on that to work out how colour choice creates atmosphere.\u00a0 This is my source.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola-again.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-940\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola-again-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola-again-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola-again-150x102.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola-again.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Now, there are various resonances drawing me to paint this scene.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lookout place in Lisbon where people gathered to enjoy the Spring weather and the view over the river Tagus.\u00a0 We first came upon it at dusk with a clear sky, and it reminded me of Alma-Tadema&#8217;s paintings, and of the scene in Kenneth Branaugh&#8217;s &#8220;Much Ado&#8221; when the soldiers, returning triumphant at dusk, strip off and plunge into pools that were surrounded by marble pillars.\u00a0 But my camera failed me &#8211; or rather I failed it, as it&#8217;s a new one I don&#8217;t understand yet.\u00a0 We returned a few days later in different weather conditions but I was sure a photo would help me revive the memory.<\/p>\n<p>I planned a varied wash over the whole page, using\u00a0 Indian Yellow and Permanent Rose,\u00a0 to re-create the golden evening, then the figures and superstructure were laid in (dilute Ultramarine Blue). \u00a0 These blue areas mark out those parts that I will continue to refine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-948\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola01-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola01-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola01-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pergola01.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The figures are in strong silhouette.\u00a0 Next,\u00a0 I need to decide how dark the light areas in shadow should be in relation to the people.\u00a0 As you can see, I have begun to make such judgements, though as yet no modelling is defined.\u00a0 It&#8217;s early days, but the atmosphere is beginning to appear.\u00a0 The image is too clear cut as yet,\u00a0 &#8211; more thought about shade and deep shadow,\u00a0 maybe a cloud or two? \u00a0 If I\u00a0 do more work on the painting this week &#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We looked at how few colours were needed to make many other ones last week.\u00a0 Now I want to build on that to work out how colour choice creates atmosphere.\u00a0 This is my source.
