needlework (blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/) when I came across a small one of my two friends taken forty years ago with the sunlight in exactly the right place!\u00a0 OK they were younger but at the size I am painting them, that will not be a problem, and most people don&#8217;t mind looking younger, anyway.\u00a0 So I tried another sketch using this new information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AGsketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-795\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AGsketch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AGsketch.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AGsketch-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AGsketch-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/AGsketch-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 354px) 85vw, 354px\" \/><\/a>That&#8217;s more like it &#8211; not a likeness yet but the shadows and highlights are better.\u00a0 Her left eye should be a trifle higher, perhaps. \u00a0 The tilt of the head is characteristic.\u00a0 It took me two hours to achieve this much, I have so much to learn!\u00a0 I used a charcoal pencil, which is a new tool to me, so even the medium was an experiment.\u00a0 I think I have more control over the marks than I do with a charcoal stick, more precision, anyway. \u00a0 However, I think this could be the basis for painting.\u00a0 Now to tackle him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NigelSketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-800\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NigelSketch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NigelSketch.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NigelSketch-126x150.jpg 126w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/NigelSketch-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 355px) 85vw, 355px\" \/><\/a>I don&#8217;t think the introduction of white has improved his appearance any!\u00a0 But light and shade, now observed rather than imagined are better,\u00a0 if rather heavy handed.<\/p>\n<p>If time permits I will try again in pencil to see if I can achieve a likeness.\u00a0 I remember reading recently that if you don&#8217;t achieve a likeness in line, try again, because shading cannot correct an inaccurate drawing.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a great incentive to observe more closely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We were looking through old photos to do with Rachel&#8217;s &#8220;100 hearts&#8221;
