{"id":346,"date":"2017-04-11T10:00:48","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=346"},"modified":"2017-04-09T10:54:04","modified_gmt":"2017-04-09T09:54:04","slug":"meander-book-treasures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=346","title":{"rendered":"Meander Book Treasures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pockets in the book are very small by my standards, so I thought I&#8217;d try portraits in watercolour.\u00a0\u00a0 They are largely foreground making such detail as I could manage contribute usefully to the finished painting.\u00a0 That sounds like a piece of woolly thinking, and it is!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know where I&#8217;m going with this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Lady.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-353\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Lady-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Lady-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Lady-128x150.jpg 128w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Lady.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 85vw, 256px\" \/><\/a>The lady is my first attempt.\u00a0 She graced the front cover of a book I am reading at the moment, and I loved her headdress.\u00a0 My new-found courage to pick up a pencil and draw helped me here &#8211; none of my usual &#8220;crutches&#8221; would have worked at this size anyway.\u00a0 I sketched her out with surprising ease, certainly enough to encourage me to introduce paint.\u00a0 I enjoyed the delicacy and lightness of touch demanded by working so small. (Sorry to be going on about &#8220;Small&#8221;, but it really is new ground for me).\u00a0 She looks younger, pert even, in comparison with the original image.<\/p>\n<p>Faces, then are possible.\u00a0 I own a book<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jan-van-Eych.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-352\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jan-van-Eych-258x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jan-van-Eych-258x300.jpg 258w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jan-van-Eych-129x150.jpg 129w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jan-van-Eych.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 258px) 85vw, 258px\" \/><\/a> of self-portraits,\u00a0 &#8220;A Face to the World&#8221; by Laura Cumming, a great study if you are interested in painting and paintings, which fell open at Jan van Eych wearing his trademark red turban.\u00a0 This is turning into a &#8220;hats&#8221; project!\u00a0 He is contemporary with my lady and very striking.\u00a0 I really enjoyed his many folded turban.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Turner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-354\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Turner-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Turner-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Turner-128x150.jpg 128w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Turner.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 255px) 85vw, 255px\" \/><\/a>My second painting is a painter, and my favourite of all time is Turner.\u00a0 I discovered him in the Lady Lever Art Gallery aged about 15, and thought I found an unrecognised genius!\u00a0 His self-portrait is of his young self and he isn&#8217;t wearing a hat.
