{"id":1572,"date":"2021-03-11T10:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T10:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=1572"},"modified":"2021-03-09T10:26:27","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T10:26:27","slug":"a-street-in-verona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=1572","title":{"rendered":"A street in Verona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1575\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-300x199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-150x100.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona.jpeg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Hazel Soan&#8217;s workshop last Saturday took this photo as the source of her painting.\u00a0 As you can see, it&#8217;s a busy street in Verona, lots of people, lots of architecture, lots of back lighting!<\/p>\n<p>The size of her\u00a0 painting was about 11 x 17 inches, probably necessary for a meaningful demonstration of technique.\u00a0 The format of the course was the standard one &#8211; a period of demonstration, during which Hazel painted, explained what\u00a0 she was doing, and more important, why, followed by a short question time; this alternating pattern was repeated over the three hour session.\u00a0 The option for the students was either to paint along with Hazel, or to try to catch up during the question time.\u00a0 Neither are entirely successful.\u00a0 If you paint along you miss half the instruction, and the question sessions were not long enough to catch up!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know the answer to this one.<\/p>\n<p>First the drawing.\u00a0 Hazel found the centre of her (rough watercolour) paper and the centre of her image.\u00a0 Starting from there, she expanded her drawing, only putting those lines necessary to guide the brush.\u00a0 The figures were placed but not fully drawn.\u00a0 As Hazel said, if you were doing this outside, the people wouldn&#8217;t wait for you!\u00a0 \u00a0 It would be different people by the time you got to paint!<\/p>\n<p>After masking out the high lights on head and shoulders, Hazel wet the area of the buildings and floated in their basic colourings, dropping in the darker windows, eaves, balconies etc while the paint was wet so that the edges blurred slightly.\u00a0 If an area dried out too much to allow this to happen, she left it to dry completely, then re-wet it to finish the job.\u00a0 These passages took about a hour.<\/p>\n<p>Next she tackled the people, either singly if alone, or as a group, persons and cast shadows together.\u00a0 All are back lit, so each silhouette was created in mid-tone ultramarine then &#8220;dressed&#8221;.\u00a0 Aim at approximation and don&#8217;t fiddle!<\/p>\n<p>A final passage over the street surface and the addition of any final details\u00a0 that the PAINTING told you were useful completed the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>It was very instructive to work with Hazel on a large painting in real time, something DVDs can&#8217;t do, the rhythm of thought and execution so affirming,\u00a0 so encouraging, so positive.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my (unfinished) painting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1577\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-01-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-01-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-01-150x115.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Verona-01.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 85vw, 370px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hazel Soan&#8217;s workshop last Saturday took this photo as the source of her painting.\u00a0 As you can see, it&#8217;s a busy street in Verona, lots of people, lots of architecture, lots of back lighting!
