{"id":1356,"date":"2020-08-20T10:00:37","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T09:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=1356"},"modified":"2020-08-23T10:29:47","modified_gmt":"2020-08-23T09:29:47","slug":"the-threatening-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/?p=1356","title":{"rendered":"The threatening storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is fun, just the job for a rainy afternoon.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit of a mash up, derived from the third and final painting in the watercolour class and\u00a0 from a DVD I have by Jean Haines, &#8220;Watercolour Passion&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Both tutors were using very wet paint,\u00a0 Mike to create an atmosphere and Jean to loosen the mind and hand\/arm in watercolour exercises which might, or might not be useful later.<\/p>\n<p>The image for the course painting was of Milford Sound in New Zealand, with steep slopes and lowering clouds, a bright sea and a small steamer.\u00a0 Mike was mixing his colours on the palette to achieve his vision, but Jean&#8217;s use of intense neat colour in the presence of copious amounts of water appealed to the colourist in me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/approaching-storm-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1358\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/approaching-storm-01-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/approaching-storm-01-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/approaching-storm-01-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/approaching-storm-01-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/approaching-storm-01.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>I set the board at an acute angle about 45 degrees, and the paper at an angle on the board, as you can see.\u00a0 The intention is to encourage the paint to run diagonally down the paper.\u00a0 Using my squirrel mop, I started in the top corner using neat Indigo,just a few strokes fanning out.\u00a0 Then I loaded the cleaned brush with\u00a0 clean water stroking some at the edge of my paint strokes and some in the dark wet Indigo so that it ran in varying strengths but always diagonally. \u00a0 I had a picture to paint (!) so I stopped\u00a0 the careering paint with a stroke of clean water in the opposite direction defending the dry paper behind it which\u00a0 later had pale colour added. \u00a0 About half way down the paper I needed to make room the sea,\u00a0 so I laid a piece of clean cloth across the paper and mopped up the excess water. \u00a0 I laid damp brush strokes of clean water across the sea horizontally, letting the mountains bleed a bit.\u00a0 I did enjoy that!<\/p>\n<p>Let it dry thoroughly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-gathering-storm02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1363\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-gathering-storm02-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-gathering-storm02-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-gathering-storm02-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-gathering-storm02-766x1024.jpg 766w, https:\/\/blog.williamsonfineart.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-gathering-storm02.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 85vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>I used Manganese blue for the water, turning the paper to an upright position and using it quite intensely near the mountains, adding water as\u00a0 I\u00a0 approached the bottom of the paper.\u00a0 At this board angle you don&#8217;t get cauliflowers!\u00a0 Some dry brush strokes added craggy detail to the mountains.\u00a0 Again let it dry thoroughly.\u00a0\u00a0 Finally I put in the steamer to give scale to the mountains and give humanity to the painting.\u00a0 Though it&#8217;s not a masterpiece, it was exhilarating.\u00a0 I think I prefer stage one to the finished result.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is fun, just the job for a rainy afternoon.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit of a mash up, derived from the third and final painting in the watercolour class and\u00a0 from a DVD I have by Jean Haines, &#8220;Watercolour Passion&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Both tutors were using very wet paint,\u00a0 Mike to create an atmosphere and Jean to loosen &hellip;
